Bražuolės botaninis draustinis
In the eyes of many, river Bražuolė is among the most beautiful rivers in Lithuania. Its beauty and might is best seen in springtime when snowmelt water flows into the river and then it pushes through its deep valleys like a powerful mountain river (that it isn’t).However, this meant that the river was suitable for labour - a dam was built on it and stood there for more than a century, even long after the watermill was gone. But recently, in 2020, the dam was removed and river Bražuolė became the site of the very first dam removal in Lithuania. This happened in order to restore the natural flow of the river and the spawning ground for salmon and sea trout. The remains of the dam were abandoned for decades and were acting as a barrier for migratory fish and other aquatic species. The 15k euros needed for the removal was funded by crowdfunding campaign, led by WWF and Dam Removal Europe. Because of its unique habitats, the river belongs to NATURA2000 network. Its valley and surrounding areas are truly beautiful and botanically diverse. Its waters - too, as salmon, trout and other fish come to spawn in it. For these and other reasons, the valley of river Bražuolė is protected and is designated as a botanical reserve. You can take various beaten paths along the shores to the confluence of the river Bražuolė and River Neris. The view at the very end is very rewarding. The hike is easy, but can be tougher if you wanna walk closer to the river at all times. I have to admit, I thoroughly enjoyed hiking along its shores and soaking in all that natural beauty surrounding the river. I recommend other do that, too!
