Porijų Šv. Augustino koplyčia

A gorgeous little chapel of traditional Lithuanian wooden vernacular architecture surrounded by beautiful fir woods. Interesting to see and in my humble opinion - unexpectedly beautiful.More about the chapel:The chapel is an example of vernacular wooden sacred architecture of the 19th century (perhaps the second half) influenced by the traditions of the classicist style, but also having its own characteristics. The chapel was renovated and repaired by the local community in the first years of restored Independence. It is built in a secluded place, surrounded by for woods of the Žalioji giria, and it is encircled by a small village cemetery. The cemetery is beautiful and well taken care of by the local community. The chapel belongs to Daujėnai parish. In this chapel, the traditional St. Augustine's mass takes place. The Porijai chapel axis is oriented - as usual - with the altar to the east. It is a considerable rectangular building, 12.60 m long and 7.45 m wide, finished with a distinctive double-walled apse containing a triangular sacristy. A portico, of a rather rare type, protrudes from the main facade: its four columns, arranged at unequal spacing (the middle one is narrower), reach just above the door and support the choir projecting outwards, the wall of which is connected to the plane of the triangular shelter panel. This facade is distinguished by a more complex structure of volumes, and a large rather ornate door, three triangular windows and a turret on the gable. The outer side of the single-door entrance is decorated with decorative paneling. There are two large high windows in the walls on the sides of the chapel, and a smaller and lower window in the diagonal walls of the sacristy. The exterior walls of the chapel are paneled with horizontal panels, only the facade wall of the nave and the choir are paneled with vertical panels. Now the chapel is covered with slate, only the square tower is covered with tin and finished with a pyramidal roof of the same material. At its top rises a wooden profiled spire with an iron cross.
